Relationship between staff thriving, through engagement and research activity, and hospital-related outcome measures: A retrospective cross-sectional study

Both the standardised hospital mortality index (SHMI) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) ratings are used by National Health Service (NHS) to monitor performance in English hospitals. We assessed if staff thriving, concept of vitality learning at work, through application surrogate measures engagement research activity is associated with more favourable outcomes. This concerned a retrospective cross-sectional study using data for 129 NHS Trusts from year 2019. Outcome were SHMI (linear regression, unstandardised coefficient beta) CQC (binary logistic odds ratio [OR]), whereas independent variables considered location, degree patient deprivation, (drawn Institute Research records controlled size), scores (based on three survey questions corresponding validated factors). Staff accounted over half 13% variance R2 whole model related improved rating (OR 13.75, p-value 0.002). Increased was lower score (unstandardized beta −0.024, 0.007, 5% each point change quotient), but independently higher seen Northern (beta 0.063, 0.003, 11.6%). The deprivation did not influence or outcomes regression models. thriving exhibits modest, yet significantly, association performance; this observed despite an underlying regional dichotomy rates.
